Theory Test

The total cost of the Theory Test is £23.00 and it comprises two distinct parts. The first part consists of FIFTY multiple choice questions taken from a bank of over ONE THOUSAND and now includes a CASE STUDY where the questions relate to a typical driving situation. All the questions are based on the Highway Code and road safety matters.

BEWARE NON-OFFICIAL WEBSITES WHO WILL CHARGE A HIDDEN ADMIN FEE ON TOP OF THE OFFICIAL TEST FEE!!!!!!! Follow the link at the bottom of the page to the OFFICIAL site.

The test is taken using a “touch screen” computer. A practice session lasting up to fifteen minutes is available before the test begins. Only one question will appear on screen at a time and you can navigate backwards or forwards through the questions to review or change answers if necessary. Beware - some questions have more than one correct answer - READ THE QUESTIONS THOROUGHLY!

FIFTY SEVEN minutes are allowed to complete the multiple choice part of the test and at least FORTY-THREE questions must be answered correctly to pass.

The questions are divided into fourteen categories as follows;

    • Alertness
    • Attitude
    • Safety and your vehicle
    • Safety margins
    • Hazard awareness
    • Vulnerable road users
    • Other types of vehicles
    • Vehicle handling
    • Motorway rules
    • Rules of the road
    • Road and traffic signs
    • Documents
    • Accidents
    • Vehicle Loading

Once the multiple choice questions have been completed you may take a break of up to THREE minutes before the second part of the test, dealing with hazard perception, begins automatically.

The second part consists of a series of FOURTEEN CGI video clips, each containing one or more “developing” hazards, viewed from the drivers perspective. A sample clip is shown before the actual test commences. You respond by clicking a button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may cause you, the driver, to change speed or direction. (Note that you DO NOT have to move a pointer to the hazard). The sooner you respond, the more points (max FIVE per hazard) you will score. There are FIFTEEN scoreable hazards in total. (ONE clip contains TWO scoreable hazards). Before each clip starts there is a TEN second pause to allow you to fully assess the new situation.

The hazard perception part of the test lasts about TWENTY minutes and you cannot repeat any of the video clips. For learner car drivers, a pass mark of FORTY-FOUR out of SEVENTY-FIVE is needed.

BOTH the multiple choice and the hazard perception parts of the test must be passed at the same attempt. If you fail either part you must take the whole test again! The present pass rate is around 62%. To save time (and money!) it is essential that you prepare properly for your theory test. If you do not pass you must wait at least THREE working days before making a further attempt. A Theory Test Pass Certificate is required in order to book a practical test appointment, so don’t delay—start reading today!
